چکیده

We describe a basic experiment for the undergraduate laboratory that demonstrates aspects of both the science and the art of precision electronic measurements. The essence of the experiment is to measure the resistance of a small length of brass wire to high accuracy using a simple voltage divider and a lock-in amplifier. By performing the measurement at different frequencies and different drive currents, one observes various random noise sources and systematic measurement effects. © 2003 American Association of Physics Teachers. @DOI: 10.1119/1.1579497#

Development and evaluation of a tutorial to improve students’ understanding of a lock-in amplifier

A lock-in amplifier is a versatile instrument frequently used in physics research. However, many students struggle with the basic operating principles of a lock-in amplifier which can lead to a variety of difficulties. To improve students’ understanding, we have been developing and evaluating a research-based tutorial which makes use of a computer simulation of a lock-in amplifier. The tutorial...

Dual-Phase Lock-In Amplifier Based on FPGA for Low-Frequencies Experiments

Photothermal techniques allow the detection of characteristics of material without invading it. Researchers have developed hardware for some specific Phase and Amplitude detection (Lock-In Function) applications, eliminating space and unnecessary electronic functions, among others. This work shows the development of a Digital Lock-In Amplifier based on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) for...

An undergraduate laboratory experiment on quantized conductance in nanocontacts

We describe an undergraduate laboratory experiment on conductance steps observed to occur near integer multiples of 2e/h as nanocontacts form and break between gold wires in loose contact. This experimental arrangement was first described by Costa-Krämer et al. @Surf. Sci. 342, L1144 ~1995!#. A simple op-amp circuit in conjunction with an inexpensive storage oscilloscope suffice to observe the ...

Ndnano Undergraduate Research Fellowship (nurf) 2015 Project Summary

I gained a lot of new skills during my summer research in Notre Dame, and I was fortunate to have worked alongside highly skilled and experience scientists and engineering. First of all, I was introduced to the clean room, in the Notre Dame Nanofabrication Facility (NDNF), where state of the art nanofabrication is performed in the Electrical Engineering building. The NDNF consists of three larg...

Design of a Lock-in Amplifier with Current-Mode Oscillator

The lock-in amplifier can be used in instrumentation systems as a part of the conditioning circuit that optimizes and supports the signals coming from sensors, being capable of measuring the electrical impedance (or admittance) of such sensors, by exciting them with a local oscillator. In industrial environments and research laboratories, it is important to ensure that the level of current pass...
